Kristin Phillips has been a Clinical Educator in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders since 2008.  She is currently contracted to the NC Department of Public Safety to provide speech pathology services to inmates at the Foothills Correctional Institution (FCI) and several other correctional facilities across the state of NC.  Kristin’s passion for providing SLP services to inmates began in 1996 when she, herself, completed a graduate training experience at the FCI.      

The mission of Kristin’s unit at the FCI is to provide services to those inmates who participate in education activities, supporting their efforts to become responsible and productive individuals who can make positive contributions to the community following their release from prison.  Her responsibilities include clinical supervision of graduate students in the Appalachian State speech-language pathology program, provision of direct services to inmates, and development /implementation of effective evaluation and treatment plans in accordance with federal, state, and professional standards.
