Vision, Mission and Strategic Plan 2014-2019

Vision Statement

The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders aspires to be a community of scholars and practitioners educating students in models of best practice through the integration of diverse academic and clinical learning experiences, research, and service.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Department Communication Sciences and Disorders is to prepare students for successful careers in speech-language pathology. Students attain knowledge and skills in basic human communication processes, and in the prevention, assessment, and treatment of communication and swallowing disorders through outcome-based educational practices

Strategic Plan

Informed by the mission, the strategic plan of the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders outlines the ways in which Department members will achieve the vision for the future.

Goal 1: Foster a student-centered, outcome-based learning environment.

The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders will:

  1. Use research and evidence-based practice to guide and evaluate all academic and clincal programs.
  2. Actively include students in clinical learning experiences.
  3. Engage students in the professional community by promoting participation in professional organizations and activities.
  4. Support students in their development of professional interpersonal and communcation skills by guiding each student in the navigation of challenges through ongoing educational opportunities.
  5. Monitor student achievement of knowledge and skills outcomes across time.
  6. Encourage collegiality within the Department by sponsoring social events for faculty and students.
  7. Maintain syllabi illustrating how the outcomes will be demonstrated through course work and clinical experiences.
  8. Conduct ongoing evaluation of outcome-based education, modify policy as indicated, and disseminate findings professionally.
  9. Provide opportunities for students to engage in evidence-based practice to foster professional growth.

Goal 2: Integrate the academic and clinical aspects of the program by promoting co-inquiry among the faculty and students.

The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders will:

  1. Develop and review academic and clinical curricula to determine appropriate courses and practices for EBP concepts.
  2. Develop academic and clinical curricula which cover clinical research methods, critical appraisal of research, and application of research to clinical practice.

Goal 3: Offer comprehensive clinical services to the community and region.

The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders will:

  1. Continue to enhance the quality of existing clinical programs as well as to develop new programs.
  2. Collaborate with clinical programs at Appalachian State University and regional service agencies in the provision of health and human services to individuals and families in Northwestern North Carolina.

Goal 4: Honor human diversity.

The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders will:

  1. Promote scholarly study in the areas of normal communication, linguistic variation, and disorders in culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) populations.
  2. Engage in best clinical practices regarding prevention, identification, and treatment for CLD populations.
