Non-Degree Status
Permission may be obtained from the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders to take up to 9 semester hours of graduate coursework as a non-degree seeking student. To obtain permission to enroll in one or more CD graduate courses:
- If you have not applied for admission to the Graduate School, or you have been admitted and are withdrawing, you should contact the Graduate School.
- If you have applied for admission to the Graduate School, and have not been offered admission, there are three steps that must be completed before you will be allowed to register for courses:
- The first step is to complete the Change of Classification Approval Form (see attached sample form). The completed form must indicate that you have applied for admission to graduate study and have not been offered admission.
- Once the Change of Classification Approval Form has been approved, you have two choices regarding application for admission to non-degree status:
You may use the original application for admission to Graduate School as the application for admission to Non-Degree-Seeking status.
or
You may complete a new application and pay a new application fee specifically for admission to Non-Degree-Seeking status. This will reserve the original application for admission to graduate study if you wish to be reconsidered for admission to graduate study in a later review. - When you have completed the procedures outlined above, you must request permission to take specific graduate courses offered by the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders (see attached sample Non-Degree Approval Form). The request must be approved by the course instructor, the Chair of the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, and the Graduate School. Instructor and Department Chairperson approval are contingent on the following:
- Graduate course work completed in non-degree status is not considered in decisions regarding admission to the Master of Science Degree (M.S.) in Speech-Language Pathology (only the cumulative undergraduate GPA or the GPA for a completed graduate degree program is considered in the admission process).
- Permission may be granted only when there is space available without increasing the maximum enrollment for the course.
- Non-degree seeking students are not permitted to register for any course until all degree-seeking graduate students have registered.
- Persons in non-degree status may not register for any CD courses titled Clinical Practicum or Internship.
Graduate School Application Procedures for Non-Degree Seeking Students
Applicants seeking to enroll for the first time as non-degree graduate students must apply to the Graduate School. Applicants must submit:
- A completed on-line application form (http://www.gradadmissions1.appstate.edu), including a resume to be uploaded as a MS word or PDF document.
- The application fee.
- Official transcripts of all previous college-level academic work, even if included as transfer on another transcript. Transcripts should be secured from the university or college, embossed with the school seal and enclosed in a sealed envelope. Transcripts that do not arrive in the Graduate School in sealed envelopes will be considered unofficial and cannot be used for admission purposes. Former students of Appalachian do not need to submit official transcripts for their Appalachian coursework, but transcripts from all other institutions, including transfer credit, must be resubmitted.
Admission as a non-degree student does not guarantee permission to enroll in specific courses, and some departments may reserve courses for degree-seeking students only. Permission to enroll in a graduate course must be obtained through completion of the appropriate form. The form can be obtained from the Graduate School web site: http://www.graduate.appstate.edu/forms_graduate/index.html
Coursework taken as a non-degree student is not normally counted toward a graduate degree. If a student is accepted into a graduate degree program after taking non-degree coursework, the student's advisory committee can petition for no more than 9 semester hours of non-degree status
